If you’re planning to attend the upcoming IAAPA trade show, don’t forget to check out the schedule for the different educational seminars. There are many different roundtable discussions, seminars, and even social events that you may want to check out. I am even speaking Thursday at the Rev-Up Revenue- Go-kart Tips and Tricks at 9am Thursday November 19th. I have the honor of speaking side-by-side with industry experts on how to operate a profitable go kart track. Topics all the way from operations, throughput and guest satisfaction from Andy McNeely (from The Track Family Fun Parks) to maintenance tips from Kevin Fife (the director of mechanical services with the Apex Parks Group) and myself. It should be an informative session and good for any FEC or amusement park that operates go-karts.

Go Kart Track Trends

In the last few years, we have seen a trend developing in new track construction: going “big”. We have worked with several clients who want to take go-kart tracks to the next level. Of course, wooden multi-level tracks have been around for a while, but the new tracks are going bigger, longer and higher than ever before. Parks with multiple tracks need to give the guests a reason to drive all of the tracks by making each of them different and all of them exciting. Today’s guests have so many choices for entertainment that many parks are going bigger in order to get the guest to their park or to be better than their competition. The more exciting tracks should see a larger draw from father distances, much like thrill parks. The tracks we have assisted with range from extra-long, multi-level tracks to wooden-coaster-like designs.

Another idea is theming the tracks.  We have heard of features such as racecar body panels, LED lighting around the track, race-themed tracks, or even a ¾ rock wall “enclosure” (where the kart can be seen by the attendant) that gives the guest the feeling they are driving through a tunnel. The standard track is still a popular option, but more new locations are definitely taking their track(s) to the next level!

Electric Go Karts …. Are They Really the Next Generation?!?

$

Much hoopla has been generated regarding the future of karting: are electrics going to be the next wave? Are they the greatest thing since sliced bread? Will they help me sleep at night? Well, I am going to talk about some of the truths and myths of what is being said about electric go karts.

Let me start by saying, electric karts are great; we sell hundreds each year, and the operators are normally quite happy with the karts and their operation. The operators that typically get electric karts have some things in common. They might be indoors where it’s a no brainer: no need for an expensive ventilation system that will be pumping out not only the exhaust, but the warm air in the winter or cold air in the summer and making your HVAC work overtime, causing expensive electrical bills. Also, the electric kart is a great alternative where cities or other municipalities have said “no way” on the noise or pollution of gas powered karts (we have several of those type of installations).

Now let’s discuss some of the truths…. “Electric karts have little to no maintenance.”  I will agree on that statement to a point, but don’t forget that ALL karts have (and will need maintenance on) tires, brakes, belts, steering components, seats and pads, seatbelts… want me to keep going? The electronic components are, for the most part, very solid, however, they need to be connected to one another with wires. Wires have connections that are applied by the kart manufacturer. Most will connect those to terminal strips to organize contact points. The vibration from the karts (not to mention the occasional accidental banging into rails or other karts) can cause those contact points to loosen or break. At J&J, we have chosen to not go the old-fashioned route of utilizing terminal strips (all of our connections are made through a circuit board allowing for easy trouble shooting if and when something like this happens), but even with our high quality connectors and waterproof connection points, they can still have issues.

Next truth: batteries and maintenance for them. The weakest points on an electric go kart is the batteries. There is no doubt that the batteries are being strained more so in go-karts than in most every other application. They should be load tested quite often (we recommend weekly) to find batteries that might be starting to fail. If you don’t catch a failing battery early enough, not only will you have one bad battery, it will become 4 bad batteries, as the other 3 will have to work twice as hard to keep up for the failing one. If you catch it early enough, you can put that battery on a lower-voltage battery charger and often times bring it back to life. Also, keep in mind that the batteries are sealed and charging is a fine line of doing it as fast as you can without causing the batteries to overheat. If they get too hot, they will vent and there is no way to put that material back into the batteries: this will typically reduce its lifecycle. We recommend a 1-to-1 charge time during peak operations and actually longer charge times on non-peak to ensure the longest life of the batteries.

Now onto the myths… Number one is that electric go karts require fewer people for operations. That point is only valid if you have a dedicated person to re-fuel the gas karts in the morning or re-fuel later in the day… I will accept that point if it applies (which it almost never does). BUT if it took a certain number of attendants to operate the track during peak operational times with gasoline-powered karts, it WILL take the same number of attendants to operate the karts during peak times with electric-powered go karts. The electric go kart will not do the following ….. yet:  make sure the seatbelt is fastened properly and tight, prevent guests from bumping into one another, fix itself after a spin out, properly supervise itself during the session, thank the guest after the race or tell the guests where the exit is when they get out of the kart… to name just a few things. I wish I could admit that it was true that you can save labor money by just buying a different model karts, but it just doesn’t make sense. Guest satisfaction and safety should be first on your list of priorities and making money will follow.

I want to end this by saying again that where electric karts are needed they are great!! But they are not at a point where it makes sense to switch from gas-powered models based on bells and whistles that are not all that they are cracked up to be.

Goodbye ~ Kevin Bell

I have bitter sweet news to announce: Friday, December 18th will be my last day with J&J Amusements. I am very sad about leaving after spending a little over 16 years working here. I have been to more parks than I can remember, trained hundreds of new operators and attendants, and loved every minute of all of it! I have met many great operators, most of whom I consider not just people I have met in the field, but friends.

One thing that I have learned going to all of the different locations is just how much I love this industry, and even though I enjoyed working on the manufacturing level, I really missed being out where the fun is happening. So, beginning in January, I will be at a fun center somewhere (I can’t say now for specific reasons), going back to my roots in this industry.

One thing I have been very lucky to experience is being able to work for and with great people in this industry. I will miss all of the wonderful people at J&J and want to thank them all for all of the great memories, experience and opportunities I had here. The manufacturing quality, combined knowledge and customer service in J&J is second to none and I have always been proud to be a part of it.

I hope to see many of the operators I have gotten to know in the future, maybe at an IAAPA show or other conference I may attend. I would leave my new cell number here for my industry friends, but I am hoping to finally get the lady who is trying to sell me an extended warranty for a truck I haven’t had for 8 years to finally stop calling me!!!

Below is a letter sent out by Douglas Spray, the previous owner of Automated Batting Cages.

Dear Friends,

I would like to thank all valued customers for your confidence and continued support of Automated Batting Cages through the years.  When I purchased ABC in January of 2006 I wrote an article in the newsletter shared by ABC and our sister company J&J Amusements.   In that article I stated that when the original owners decided to retire “the best option was to have someone take over that held the same values and high standards that have made ABC a leader in the commercial batting cage business.  I am committed to maintaining these standards.”

In January of 2016, I will be semi retiring, and Automated Batting Cages will experience a change of ownership.   In many ways this is a sad time for me, but after 39 years in this industry, I am ready to go out and “smell the roses”.  J&J Amusements will assume ownership of Automated Batting Cages.  As stated in that original article, I believed then and now, that this is the best option.  J&J is an outstanding company that shares the same values as ABC.  I have complete confidence that J&J will not only continue the proud tradition of ABC, but have the personnel and abilities to excel in the batting cage market, plus maintain and even improve the high level of services you all well deserve.

I will remain in a consulting capacity for the next year to insure that this is a smooth transition.  Thank you all again for your loyalty, and please know that ABC, a division of J&J Amusements, will remain available and supportive to all of your batting cage needs.

To Bridge or Not to Bridge

$
0
0

~By Paul L. Zellar

There are a lot of go-kart tracks that have been built with bridges in recent years and lots of interest in making them bigger and better.  The wooden elevated tracks are almost all bridge as they spiral up and down ramps and run in multiple levels.  They are a very visual attraction for a facility, but that is about the only good thing I can say about them.

The first track that I designed in the early 90’s had four bridges and was a monster to operate.  We wanted a track that showcased go-karts driving on elevated portions of the track similar to the elevated portions of our miniature golf courses.  After that every track we built had a double bridge as the main feature to be seen from the road frontage.  Then one day a regional manager approached me and asked if we would consider eliminating bridges from the new tracks we were about to build.  After listening to his reasons we built two more tracks without a bridge and found that he was right.  We found that the bridges looked good but were an expensive detriment to the efficient operation of the track.

A Visual Barrier

We found that the bridge and associated ramps, retaining walls, and earthworks created a visual barrier that required an extra track attendant to man the hidden section of track.  Good practice for track operations calls for attendants to be stationed so they can respond to any incident where go-karts get hung up on the barrier and get them back in operation quickly.  The attendant operating the remote shut off system in the pit could not see the entire track and had to rely on signals from the attendant at the blind spot when an incident occurred that required the track to be shut down for safety.  An alternative was to equip the blind spot attendant with a hand held transmitter of the remote shut off system for a quicker response.

The other detriment of the visual barrier was that spectators could not see the entire track and would watch their friends or children who were driving disappear from view at every lap.  We found that spectators wanted to see the entire track and not miss any of the action.

Up And Down Slopes

A bridge requires slopes to allow go-karts to climb up to the elevation of the deck and then down from the deck to the level of the rest of the track.  These slopes require that the go-karts are geared down so they can climb them in the event that they are stopped on the slope up, which is a common occurrence on a busy track.  When the remote shut off system is activated all go-karts are stopped at once wherever they happen to be.  Unfortunately, if they are on an up slope they may roll backward, as the shut off system does not brake the go-kart, it only takes power away from the engine.  On a down slope they may roll forward and hit another go-kart for the same reason.

Not As Fun To Drive

Go-karts are equipped with devices to limit their maximum speed for safety reasons.  If there is a long straight section of track drivers will keep their foot on the gas pedal but their go-karts will not go any faster, as the maximum speed has already been reached. Track designers limit the length of straight sections of track to keep the interest of drivers for this reason.  Tracks with double bridges have a long straight deck that is often boring to drive.

The other effect on driving fun is that most go-karts slow down when climbing the slope to a bridge.  The rest of the track may be competitive with right and left turns to challenge drivers, but then they come to that slope and it frequently bogs them down.  The heavier the driver, the more they are slowed down, even with the bigger nine horsepower engines commonly used on go-karts with tracks with bridges.

Expensive Construction

The ironic part of this story is that park owners are paying a fortune in concrete, steel, retaining walls, earthworks, and storm drains to construct these bridges that make their tracks less profitable to operate.  We used to try to keep the expense down by lowering the headroom under the bridge to five feet, which reduced the height of retaining walls and slopes.  I don’t know how many times our attendants hit their heads while running under a bridge, but it does not feel very good when it happens.

The most expensive construction is the elevated wooden tracks that are built almost entirely of treated lumber, timbers, and steel.  When you compare the cost of that type of construction to that of a concrete track poured over compacted earth, it is cost prohibitive for most facilities.

More Track Per Acre?

There is a myth that bridges allow more track to be built per square foot because of the “multilevel” design.  I have found that this is not true because of the rigid limitations that bridges have in laying out a track.  A bridge requires a long straight deck with retaining walls and earthworks on each end to support the slopes.  It also requires that the lower section(s) of track cross at a right angle in order to limit the length of the deck above.  A track without a bridge has no such design restraints and can make more efficient use of the area and topography available.

Even More Profitable

I know that there are some people in the go-kart business that do not agree on these points and are running a very profitable track with a bridge.  My response is that they would be even more profitable if they had a good design and did not have the bridges on their track in the first place.  The only exception to this would be the wooden elevated tracks in tourist hotspots where the sheer size and height of the structure draws tourists in to give that monster track a try.  A track on the ground does not have the same visual effect as one that is fifty feet in the air.  Unfortunately, after most people drive the elevated track they don’t want to do it again, as most are not that fun and rough to drive.  In a tourist market this is acceptable as most tourists are replaced weekly with a new group that has not driven their track yet.

Conclusion

If you are considering building a new go-kart track with a bridge, take my advice and don’t do it.  Make your track fun with limited straights, frequent turns, and some banking.  The product we are selling is the fun driving experience, not how much of the track can be seen from traffic driving by.  Go to go-kart tracks in your area and drive them with and without bridges for a “fun check” and you will see what I am talking about.
